A guided trek through the Sinai highlands is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Egypt’s wild beauty. The region offers a dramatic mix of soaring mountain peaks, deep sandstone valleys, and hidden green gardens, creating a trail network unlike anywhere else in the country. Whether you’re scaling Egypt’s highest summit of Mount Catherine or walking ancient trails to Mount Abbas Basha, this guided trek takes you through the most breathtaking wilderness Egypt has to offer.
The Sinai Mountains are more than just terrain — they hold centuries of Bedouin heritage. On this trekking adventure in Egypt, you’ll experience traditional desert life: cooking over fire, sleeping beneath starry skies, and walking ancient trails once traveled by tribal ancestors. Along the way, you’ll discover incredible hidden gems like El-Galt El-Azraq, Wadi El-Shaq, and Saqar Canyon, making the guided trek not just scenic, but deeply cultural and meaningful.
Whether you’re a solo traveler, part of a group, or looking for personal transformation, this guided trek through Sinai’s ancient trails is far more than a physical challenge — it’s a journey through time, silence, and soul-stirring landscapes that stay with you long after the trail ends.

Arrival in Saint Catherine: Gateway to the Ancient Trails
Day 1
Arrive in Saint Catherine City and settle into Farag Fox Local Camp. If you arrive early, take the chance to visit Saint Catherine’s Monastery — one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world and the spiritual starting point of these ancient trails. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the guided trek ahead with the Gebalya tribe.
Accommodation: Farag Fox Local Camp (double rooms)
Saint Catherine City to Mount Na'ga (11 km)
Day 2
After collecting your daily bags, the guided trek begins. We drive to Abo Sela village, then set off on foot through Shaq Tenya toward Mount Na’ga.
At the summit, enjoy a sweeping panorama and lunch with the Sinai highlands stretching in every direction. We then descend to our camping garden beside Saqar Canyon for the night — the first of many ancient trail campsites that define this journey.
Saqar Canyon to El-Galt El-Azraq (7.5 km)
Day 3
After breakfast we follow the ancient trail from the garden into Saqar Canyon, continuing through Wadi Abo Toweta and descending from Um Sellh to reach El-Galt El-Azraq — the Blue Pool — a hidden natural swimming hole deep in the highlands. We enjoy lunch beside the water, then walk on through Wadi Tubuq to reach Farsh El-Romana for our second night.
Farsh El-Romana to Mount Bab El-Donya & Jabal Abo Qoron (13.5 km)
Day 4
The longest day of the guided trek. We set off through the boulder section of Naqb Bahrya, continuing to Wadi Zattar and Ain Negela — a natural spring beside the ruins of an ancient monastery, one of the most historically layered stops on the ancient trails. From here we climb to Mount Bab El-Donya — the Gate of the World — then push on to the second summit of Jabal Abo Qoron for extraordinary highland views. We descend through the wadi to spend the night in the secret garden.
The Secret Garden to Mount Abbas Basha (8 km)
Day 5
From the secret garden we follow the ancient trail up to Mount Abbas Basha, where the ruins of a 19th-century royal palace sit at dramatic altitude above the Sinai highlands. Take in the panorama over the city below, then choose your descent — a scrambling trail for the adventurous or a standard path for those who prefer it — down to our camping garden in Wadi El-Shaq.
Wadi El-Shaq to Mount Ahmar (6.5 km)
Day 6
After breakfast the guided trek moves through the Red Valley — Wadi Ahmar — along a boulder-strewn ancient trail that requires some jumping and scrambling through the rock. We climb to the summit of Mount Ahmar for lunch with wide highland views, then descend the same trail to Wadi Mathar, where we spend the night in the garden.
Wadi Mathar to Mount Saint Catherine (11.7 km)
Day 7
An early start for the most ambitious day of the guided trek — the ascent of Mount Saint Catherine at 2,642 m, the highest point in Egypt. We climb through a beautiful valley on a classic ancient trail, reaching the summit for views that stretch across the Sinai Peninsula, the Red Sea, and on clear days as far as Saudi Arabia. After lunch at the top, we descend via the rocky zigzag of Shaq Mousa to Wadi El-Arbain, where we camp at the foot of Jabal Musa for our final night on the trail.
The Ancient Trails Finale: Wadi Arbain to Mount Sinai — Jabal Musa (9.5 km)
Day 8
The last day of the guided trek ends on one of the most sacred ancient trails in the world. We climb the zigzag path to the base of the final 750 steps, ascending to the summit of Mount Sinai — Jabal Musa— where the view and the silence speak for themselves. We then descend back to Saint Catherine City, where you can choose to rest an extra night at the camp (not included in the trek price) or return to your hotel on the Red Sea coast.

What to Expect on the Guided Trek
Trekking
You don’t need to be an expert mountaineer to join this guided trek, but a solid level of fitness is required to handle 5 to 6 hours of daily walking. Together, we will navigate spectacular, boulder-strewn valleys and steep switchbacks. Because we are moving across rugged, uneven terrain, the route is rated moderate to challenging overall—with Day 4 and Day 7 being our most demanding sections.
To ensure you are fully prepared for this mountain environment, we kindly ask you to review our Booking Policies & Safety Terms before securing your spot. Rest assured, the breathtaking scenery along these ancient trails will keep you motivated every step of the way!
Food
Three full Bedouin meals are cooked fresh every single day over an open wood fire. Breakfast features eggs, cheese, beans, honey, and fresh bread. Lunch is kept lighter to keep you moving comfortably—expect fresh salads, grilled vegetables, tuna, and white cheese. Dinner is the heart of Bedouin hospitality. Because we camp deep in the desert without refrigeration, our menu is carefully planned for freshness: featuring fresh chicken early in the trek, a hearty meat meal at the midway point, and nourishing lentils, rice, pasta, and hot soup enjoyed together under the highland stars.
Accommodation
The Bedouins usually sleep under the stars, famously calling the desert sky the “million-star hotel.” While some nights on this guided trek feature stops in traditional Bedouin mountain gardens equipped with mattresses, and blankets, your primary experience will be wild camping deep in the highlands.
Because we camp along these high-altitude routes, you must be prepared for sudden mountain weather changes. Every trekker must bring a high-quality, waterproof camping tent and a 3- to 4-season sleeping bag to ensure you stay warm, dry, and comfortable through both clear nights and unexpected rain.
Weather
Saint Catherine sits at 1,600 meters above sea level, and our routes climb above 2,600 meters on summit days. This guided trek runs exclusively in April and November because these months offer the most stable and comfortable trekking conditions—boasting daytime temperatures of 15–30°C alongside crisp, cool nights.
However, highland weather changes rapidly after sunset. While we monitor live shifts closely as departure approaches, you can check the Saint Catherine AccuWeather Forecast for real-time local updates. You must come fully prepared for both intense warmth and freezing cold with high-performance outdoor clothing and dependable gear.
